ADR, clean dialogue to picture.
Automated Dialogue Replacement. Dialogue re-recorded clean and synced to picture.
ADR, short for Automated Dialogue Replacement, is the process of replacing or re-recording dialogue against the picture. When a line was lost to set noise, needs a different read, or has to be changed after the shoot, the performer comes into the studio and reads it again to the scene.
The work is done by looping. A short section of picture plays back, the actor performs the line in time with their own lip movement, and the take is matched to the original for perspective and tone so the new dialogue sits inside the scene rather than on top of it. Everything is synced to a video reference so the words land on frame.
The result is clean dialogue stems, delivered ready to drop into a mix for film, television, streaming and games.
